Based on successful initiatives from NOPS's Africana and Multicultural Studies Unit including their 20 Africana and 3 Vietnamese Studies Resource Centers and their Kids-to-Afrika, this project is an innovative, critical effort to educate the students of Warren Easton High School about the life, culture, and history of the Latin American heritage from which almost 20% of the school is descended. The project includes three major components: a Latin American Resource Center of curriculum and educational materials about Latin America to be housed in the ESL classroom and the Library; a cognitive program that will focus on one Latin American country each year and introduce the class to its history, politics and economics, and cultural expressions in the first, second, and third quarters of school respectively; and finally a travel initiative that will bring a select group of students to the country, this year Peru, they have been studying to add dimension to their learning experience. |
